Burmah Oil Company (Pipelines Ltd) was busy providing consultancy services for laying a Pipeline from Oil fields in Assam to Barauni in Bihar via Gauhati. I joined their field team in 1961. The 720 mile long Oil India Pipeline to feed Gauhati and Barauni refineries was the first major cross country pipeline in India. With 78 major rivers to cross including the mighty Brahmaputra, the project was very modern in technology used and a challenge to the consortium of contractors, Mannesmann and Saipem. I was retained for the operational phase by Oil India Ltd in 1964.
OIL - the pioneers of Pipelining in India became leaders in the field, giving consultancy services to IOC, ONGC, Bombay Port Trust etc. In 1979, I was sent for 3 years to Zambia as Engineering Manager of Tazama Pipelines Ltd who owned a 1700 km long Product line from Dar-e Salaam in Tanzania to Ndola in Zambia. Plagued with corrosion problems they needed training for their nationals in Pipeline maintenance.
In 1983 I left OIL and joined Kuwait National Petroleum Company as in-charge of the Maintenance Workshop set up of their large Refinery and Gas plant complex at Mina Al Ahmadi where I continued till my retirement in 1999. In Kuwait also, one of my main assignments was to develop local Engineers and prepare them for higher responsibilities. The 16 years I spent in Kuwait were eventful with Refinery maintenance challenging as ever. Providence was kind to us as we were in India on leave when Iraq invaded Kuwait. On return after the war I found that we had lost all our belongings. But thanks to a UN initiative, our losses were compensated.
In 1971 I married Vijayalakshmi. We have 2 daughters Sumitra & Asha. Sumitra and her husband Dr. Girish Krishnan are both pathologists based in Pune. Dr.Sumitra works for National Aids research Institute and Dr. Girish owns his own Pathology Lab at Pune. They have a daughter Yamini, 9 years old. Asha who is an Architect is in USA pursuing her Doctoral research in Environmental Behavior Sciences. Her husband Dr. Newton D’souza who is also an Architect is Asst. Prof. at University of Missouri-Columbia. Vijayalakshmi teaches English in a college nearby at Bangalore - our home since retirement in 1999. I enjoy the peace and tranquility a retired life offers after rather hectic 39 years in Oil Industry.
